If you’re in Denver in October, you’ll want to visit the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2017 to be held at the 61st & Pena Station, near Denver International Airport.

The event will feature solar-powered homes designed and built by 12 collegiate teams from the U.S and abroad. The teams have spent almost two years preparing for this event. The decathlon is free and open to the public. It runs Oct. 5 through 9 and Oct. 12 through 15.

Each of the homes are 800 square feet and 100-percent solar powered. For the first time in the event’s history, the teams will compete for $2 million in prize money. Most of the teams are made up of students from such disciplines as architecture, engineering, computer science, marketing, and others. The decathlon will include 10 contests, including architecture and engineering to home appliance performance.

In March 2016, when it was announced that Denver would be the host city for the 2017 decathlon, then Department of Energy undersecretary, Dr. Franklin Orr, said, “As one of the top 10 metro areas for solar installations and sunny days, Denver is a great choice to host the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. This competition gives students a unique opportunity to take real action on climate change and shape our sustainable future by encouraging the kind of innovation we’ll need to meet our nation’s clean energy goals.”

The competing teams include:

University of Nevada, Las Vegas
University of Maryland
Missouri University of Science and Technology
HU University of Applied Science Utrecht

École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
School of Engineering and Architecture Fribourg
